During his 2006 State of the Union address, President George Bush announced that by “applying the talent and technology of America, this country can dramatically improve our environment”. President Bush pointed toward renewable energy and to clean coal initiatives as part of his “clean energy” strategy.

The Department of Energy, the National Energy Technology Lab, the National Renewable Energy Lab, etc., are working hard to develop clean energy solutions, but there will be a significant gap in time before these solutions can be implemented; a gap where we will continue to rely on existing coal-fired plants.

Even in the most far-reaching clean energy scenarios currently being discussed in Washington, traditional “dirty” coal-fired power plants will be burning more coal in 2025 than they are today.
