Xcel Energy chooses ZoloBOSS for Tolk Station to reduce NO_x and increase availability

BOULDER, Colorado– July 7, 2009 –Xcel Energy has tested the ZoloBOSS laser-based in-furnace measurement system and has decided to install the technology permanently at Tolk Station, a 580 MWe, T-fired CE boiler in Texas.

Using the ZoloBOSS to monitor furnace exit gas temperature (FEGT) in real-time and make operational adjustments to reduce slagging will permit operators to change boiler parameters and manage FEGT for optimum performance and plant output. Avoiding slagging can have a major impact in both heat-rate, and even more importanly, avoiding uplanned outtages due to slagging and fouling in the boiler. The plant plans to integrate the ZoloBOSS measurements with their existing neural net combustion optimization software allowing them to manage combustion and optimize in real-time. The in-furnace measurements increase the effectiveness of the optimization software by providing in-site data for closed-loop control.

The plant was able to install boiler penetrations without full planned outage, thanks to Zolo Technologies' new membrane penetration measurement head design. A full 28 penetrations were completed in less than 72 hours without any access required inside the boiler. The new penetration design helped save the plant installation costs and start the project significantly sooner.
