TDLAS for boiler optimization

Here we describe results obtained during a preliminary measurement campaignfrom a novel combustion sensor based upon multiplexed tunable diode laserspectroscopy (TDLAS) applied to coal-fired electric utility boilers. Thetotally fiber-coupled sensor utilizes unique technology to combine measurementwavelengths to simultaneously probe O2, H2O, and CO concentration as well astemperature. In spite of significant transmission losses due to obscuration by coal dust and fly ash, weare able to measure temperature and monitor the target species. This workrepresents several notable accomplishments including the first use of an allfiber-coupled device for measurements on a coal-fired boiler and the firstsimultaneous detection of all three species (CO, H2O, and O2) andtemperature in a coal-fired utility boiler.

TDLAS for aeropropulsion

Emergent optical gas-sensing techniques can greatly benefit fromunprecedented investment in optical telecommunications. This articledetails collaboration between researchers in Dr. Ronald Hanson's group atStanford University's High Temperature Gasdynamics Laboratory and ZoloTechnologies, Inc. A multiplexedspectroscopy sensor or "MSS" based on tunable diode laser spectroscopy(TDLAS) is the fruit of this joint effort. TDLAS is now considered a mature laboratory technique forcombustion diagnostics thanks to the efforts of Dr. Hanson's group atStanford and a handful of other groups spread over the world.
